Our story
How it began
ISIA was established in June 2006 with a primary focus on the serum industry — ensuring the quality, safety, and ethical sourcing of serum products used in life sciences globally.
Where we are today
ISIA has expanded beyond serum to encompass all animal-derived products in life sciences, working closely with regulators, researchers, and industry stakeholders across more than 30 countries.
Key milestones
2006
Creating a Foundation
Organizational framework established including bylaws, budget, and dues philosophy. Rosemary Versteegen, PhD named CEO.
2007–2009
Building Global Connections
Outreach to a wide spectrum of groups established a global communication network. ISIA became an industry resource - forging new regulatory guidelines.
2010–2013
Expanding our Influence
ISIA Regular Membership doubled since inception. Associate Membership added to include end users of serum and suppliers of adjacent products.
2014–2017
Focus on Education
ISIA published 4 gamma irradiation scientific papers and collaborated on a rationale for determining animal age in serum.
2018–2022
Prioritizing Traceability
Traceability Certification expanded with major global companies certified and a strengthened relationship with Oritain for geographic origin testing.
2023–Present
Evolving for the Future
ISIA prioritizes the expansion of membership, more proactive engagement with regulatory authorities and education.
